Alejandra Copeland Teaches Crowdfunding Marketing at FIU

Miami, FL — May 2024 — In celebration of #MIAMITECHMONTH, Alejandra Copeland, founder of Ok Yes Pitch & Go-to-Market Messaging, led a special class for senior students at the Florida International University College of Engineering & Computing, focused on Crowdfunding Marketing Basics.

The session connected engineering innovation with the often-overlooked skill that determines whether great ideas get funded: clear, persuasive communication.

From Engineering Roots to Storytelling Impact

Copeland’s connection to the classroom was deeply personal. Raised by an electrical engineer and entrepreneur who spent decades innovating in telecommunications and power line carrier technologies, she witnessed firsthand both the brilliance of complex engineering, as well as the challenge of explaining it in a way that persuades investors, partners, and customers.

That experience shaped her career path. Blending technical curiosity with creative storytelling, Copeland has spent over two decades helping visionaries translate sophisticated ideas into narratives that resonate beyond technical audiences.

“I’ve seen how hard it is for engineers to sell innovation without losing accuracy,” Copeland shared. “That gap is exactly where storytelling matters.”

Preparing Engineers to Raise Real Capital

The FIU class centered on practical crowdfunding strategy. As part of their final project, students are required to launch a Kickstarter campaign for their MVP and actively attempt to get funded.

Drawing from experience creating 300+ demos for tech companies and working hands-on with founders, Copeland walked students through:

  • Positioning technical products for non-technical backers

  • Crafting a compelling campaign narrative

  • Aligning product value, visuals, and messaging

  • Understanding what actually motivates people to fund early-stage ideas

More than theory, the lesson emphasized execution, giving students a rare opportunity to test their pitch skills in the real world and experience what it takes to raise money for an early product.

Investing in the Next Generation of Engineers

For Copeland, the session reinforced a long-held mission: supporting the next generation of engineers by equipping them with the tools to own their story, not just build the technology.

Special thanks were extended to Dr. Arellano and Florida International University for opening the door to this collaboration and investing in applied learning that bridges innovation and entrepreneurship.

As the class wrapped, one thing was clear: when engineers learn to communicate with clarity and confidence, their ideas don’t just work—they travel.
